Notice of the temporary closure of St Peter’s Church -Monday 30th August to Friday 3rd September 2021
A site survey and structural inspection of the Southampton Chapel monument and crypt is being carried out during the above period which is necessary to establish what is needed in terms of their future management, protection and conservation.
The closure of the church is required because of insurance and health and safety reasons.
The Southampton Chapel monument
The work will be undertaken by the Skillington Workshop Ltd, a leading building conservation and restoration firm with extensive experience in conserving monuments in an ecclesiastical setting.
The work is being sponsored jointly by St Peter’s Parochial Church Council and the Shakespeare Southampton Legacy Trust (SSLT), a charity founded by Lord Montagu who is sponsoring this project.
If the project overruns due to unforeseen circumstances the church will also have to close the following week the 6th to 10th September. This will not affect Sunday services.
